Dear Barbara

Oceania Championship Tournament Defence 2006

On 24 September 2006, a number of clubs from the Wellington region held an impromptu meeting at the Kapiti Petanque Club. The clubs (listed at the bottom of this letter and all affiliated to the Wellington Petanque Association) would like to raise their concerns regarding the decision by Petanque New Zealand (PNZ), not to send a team to the Oceania championship tournament in Australia.

As the current defending champions, it is vitally important that New Zealand send a team to defend the title. To win the championships one year and not turn up for the next tournament is not satisfactory. This is not just a matter of player opportunity and development—a successful campaign to retain the championship title can be utilized by PNZ to elicit additional funding from SPARC in 2007. We believe that it would be a serious mistake to let this opportunity escape us.

On the matter of player availability, it is noted that there were insufficient players available from the original squad. However, as we believe it is very important to be represented at the Oceania Championships we would like to see the PNZ put more effort into finding players of a suitable caliber, who are willing and able to represent New Zealand. If this is not possible, we suggest that the selection is widened allowing clubs to nominate players with the criteria they must be able to meet both tournament and travel costs. From these nominations, it is hoped that a suitable team can be selected.

The clubs are aware that time is limited with regards to this matter and we request that it be considered urgently by the PNZ Executive, before the registration for the Oceania tournament closes. We would appreciate a written response to this request as soon as possible, so the matter can be further discussed at the next WPA meeting in October.

Yours sincerely
