PNZ is delighted to announce FIPJP will be sending a French team to New Zealand from 23rd January – 31st January 2008. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that PNZ intends to fully embrace and maximize for the Pétanque community.
The French team will comprise:
Philippe Suchaud- Shooter
Philippe Quintais- Milieur
Bruno Rocher- Pointer
And Victor Nataf- Technical Director
The Team will travel around the North Island visiting two regions; Auckland and Wellington.
The game will rise to a new level when the French team arrives, making it a huge ten days of Pétanque in New Zealand. To have a visit by a world champion team and coach is a unique chance and to play against and talk to these guys is unlikely to happen in NZ again.
So book your annual leave and head down to the terrain to be part of history in the making in New Zealand.
Watch the PNZ web site for regular updates on preparations for the visit
Philippe Suchaud is most certainly the ‘now ‘player in Pétanque. As reigning world champion at a tender age of 36- he now has seven world championship victories under his belt.
Suchaud is the formidable scorer in the French team. He is certainly the most talented and solid shooter in France today. Remarkably accurate, his ‘Bjorn Borg’ super cool character is never as strong as during the high voltage final stages of the World Championships.
Philippe Quintais hailed by many as the best Pétanque-player in the world. He was world champion triples eight times between 1991and 2003 and world champion precision shooting four times with a yet unbeatable world record score of 63
These days, as a coach, Quintais has contributed greatly to the victory of the French world championship team
Bruno Rocher – world champion in 2004 began playing at the age of seven, thanks to his parents who were also Pétanque players.
His view of the game is that it is a complete sport because it requires concentration, technique, tactics, physical stamina and mental toughness.
His preferred position is pointer and his favourite players are:
Pointer: Sirot, Radnic
Milieur: Loy, Le Croix
Victor Nataf is the most powerful man in the game today. Among other things, he is responsible for managing all of the competitive aspects of the Federation, including selecting the national team (seniors, juniors, women, etc.).
Nataf has strongly encouraged the professionalisation of the sport. His goal is to structure French Pétanque along the lines of other professional sports, like soccer or basketball, with a hierarchy of clubs organized into what Americans would call "leagues." He is also developing a system for ranking all elite players based on their performance in the most important tournaments.
Philippe Quintais (second) and Philippe Suchaud fourth from left- world champs
Bruno Rocher third from left – World champs 2004
