Succes for Warren at last! Here is Warren telling his story: It was in 2005 I first became involved with the Auckland All Schools Petanque Triples Tournament which was organised and run by the Herne Bay Petanque Club in association with Alliance Française, We had 56-Triples teams taking part in that Tournament. My first two years was in the capacity as a helper, since 2007 I have been the convenor for this Tournament. Prior to the 2005 Tournament I was approached by the French teachers of Botany Downs Secondary School and Edgewater College for help in preparing their teams for the Tournament, with both schools obtaining credible results Botany coming second and Edgewater finishing in the top twenty. It was after this Tournament I felt there was an untapped market and canvassed all eight of the local secondary schools in an effort to have Petanque introduced as an alternative sport, the only response has been from Botany which is the only school to take part on a yearly basis and have finished in second place in each of the last four years.
Warren has been involved with the Auckland Region Schools Petanque Competition since 2005, before that Herne Bay and in particular Ian Baker and Clive Bartleet had been running schools competitions on an annual basis.
Another local school Sancta Maria College took part in 2007 and recently contacted me requesting a programme be set up for them to start participating, they have 68 pupils from the French language classes keen to play, I have started to coach them and am giving them three hours per week, after my first session with them one of the pupils remarked that she never was keen on sport but after the session of petanque she was ecstatic about it. The school has no area set aside to play the game so they are at present practicing on a rough driveway which is making them lob instead of rolling the boules.
Botany Secondary School has from the beginning of their involvement introduced Petanque as an optional sport which has opened the door to more of their pupils, they have 35 regular players at the two one hour sessions I have at the school each week, the school has also recently installed a 15m x 10m terrain.
With the coaching at the schools and the running of the Auckland All Schools Tournament I am well supported and helped by members of our Club and the Auckland Petanque Association.
I am informed that next year St Kentigern and Macleans Colleges wish to introduce the game to their pupils.
Regards Warren

The Cockle Bay Pétanque Club's team which finished in third place in the Auckland Pétanque Association's Interclub Tournament which ran from October 30th to December 11th 2005 inclusive.
The tourament involved eight other clubs with each player competing in singles, doubles and triples, for a total of 88 games of which Cockle Bay won 53. The result was 139 points for and 109 against.
This was the best result for the club in the many years that the competition has been held.
An excellent effort by all players.
